Inside our Oenoke Ridge great room renovation in New Canaan — a soaring vaulted skylight ceiling, mahogany fireplace, custom millwork, and a layout built for gathering.
A great room renovation in New Canaan is really a project about how a family wants to gather. The Oenoke Ridge residence sits on 1.92 private acres, and at its heart was an underused living space with the potential to become the emotional center of the home. Our task was to turn that potential into a room the family would naturally gravitate toward.
A Vaulted Ceiling and a Pyramid Skylight
The defining move was opening the ceiling. We built out a vaulted volume crowned by an architectural pyramid skylight, so daylight pours into the room from above and changes character through the day. Full-height picture windows frame the pastoral grounds, making the landscape part of the room. The effect is airy without feeling cold — the kind of space that feels generous the moment you walk in.
A Mahogany Fireplace as the Anchor
Every great room needs a focal point, and here we designed and built a handcrafted mahogany fireplace mantel surround with an integrated hearth. The warmth of the wood against the dark-stained wide-plank hardwood floors gives the room a grounded, livable feel — a place that works for a quiet morning as well as a full house on a holiday.
Custom Millwork and Built-Ins
The room was completed with custom wall paneling, crown moldings, and built-in entertainment and library cabinetry. Rather than freestanding furniture that comes and goes, the storage and display become part of the architecture. Wide-cased transitions connect the great room to the adjoining dining area and to a private patio, so the space extends naturally for entertaining.
Designing for How the Family Actually Lives
A great room renovation succeeds when the finished space matches the way the family uses it — not a showroom version of living, but the real thing. For Oenoke Ridge, that meant a room that could hold a crowd, quiet down for a single reader by the fire, and connect to the outdoors when the weather allows. The design-build approach meant one team carried the vision from the first sketch to the final reveal, with no gap between the design intent and the built result.
A great room is the room a home is remembered for. If you are thinking about reimagining the heart of your home in New Canaan or anywhere in Fairfield County, we would welcome the conversation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a great room renovation successful?
A successful great room matches the way the family actually gathers — with the right volume, natural light, a focal point like a fireplace, and connections to adjoining spaces and the outdoors.
Can you add a vaulted ceiling and skylight to an existing home?
In many cases, yes. We assess the existing structure and design the ceiling buildout and skylight integration as part of the renovation, coordinating structural and waterproofing details from the start.
How long does a great room renovation take?
It depends on scope, but a focused great room renovation typically falls within a few months. We provide a project timeline during the planning phase once the design is defined.
